The study was a randomized controlled trial with small sample size. The study included 66 sedentary, overweight middle-aged adults (mean age 47 years) who were not on any medication. Participants were randomly assigned to an exercise group or a control group. All participants received two 20 minute Yoga sessions per week for eight weeks. The Yoga sessions were led by certified yoga instructors who utilized the Yoga Alliance’s standardized program.
There was a significant decrease in body fat and muscle strength in the Yoga group after 8 weeks (p=0.04, p=0.01). Weight and body composition did not change in the Yoga group. The exercise group showed a significant increase in muscle strength (p=0.03) and no change in body fat (p=0.09) compared to the control group.
